An ANSI accredited Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification obtained through a course and passing the exam are still required, but students will not need to apply for the additional Illinois FSSMC certificate. The City of Chicago will still maintain their certification.
How Do I Apply for a Chicago Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate?

Who is required to have food handler training?
Any food handler working in Illinois, unless that person has a valid Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification or unpaid volunteer. The ANSI food handler training certificates are valid for three years. Click here to begin training.
What is Food Allergen Awareness Training?
With the adoption of PA 100-0367 on August 25, 2017, amendments to the Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act were made to include an allergen awareness training requirement. All CFPMs working in a restaurant must complete additional allergen training using an approved program. Certificate of course completion must be kept at the establishment, made available to the health inspector upon request and is an item on the inspection report. Certificates are valid for 3 years. Click here to begin training.
What type of establishments need Food Allergen Awareness Training?
Restaurants assigned as High Risk by their local health department. A restaurant is defined as any business that is primarily engaged in the sale of ready-to-eat food for immediate consumption. This does not include grocery stores, convenience stores, daycares, schools, assisted living or long term care facilities, food handlers (those without CFPM certifications), and certified food protection managers for Medium and Low Risk establishments.
Is Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Required for IL Foodservice Workers?
As of August 9, 2019, Illinois state legislation requires all restaurant and bar employees to complete sexual harassment prevention training annually. Training must take place for employees within 30 days of employment. The deadline for Illinois businesses to conduct training is December 31, 2020. Certificates are valid for 1 year. Beginning July 1, 2014, a food handler certification will be required for all food handlers working in a restaurant, other than someone holding a Food Service Sanitation Manager certificate, and they must receive or obtain training in basic safe food handling principles within 30 days after employment.
The training provides food handlers with the knowledge and skills they need to safely handle foods for human consumption. Successful completion of the program assures food managers, regulators and trainers that the certificate holder has completed a basic course in food safety.
To be awarded the Certificate of Completion, an individual must complete the training course and pass the 40-question multiple-choice assessment with a 70% of higher. You may retake the assessment as many times as needed if a passing score is not achieved. The Certificate of Completion is valid for 3 years, at which time candidates must again take the course.
We offer 2 convenient ways to obtain Food Handler Training. Both methods are certified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and provide a certificate of completion immediately upon successful completion of the course.
